Mayor Castor Gives Relief Workers 3-Day Weekend
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor is thanking all the workers who responded to or have otherwise been contributing to the recovery effort in the wake of recent hurricanes by giving them the day off tomorrow, leading into the weekend.
“So many police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, linemen, debris removers and others have been working around the clock to help us get back on our feet. You’ve all worked so hard and done just an amazing job for us,” she said. “You know what? All of you go ahead and take tomorrow off and have a great weekend!”
When it was pointed out that she’s not in a supervisory position over all those people, she replied, “I’m the Mayor of Tampa” and threatened to have me arrested.
Asked by somebody else and not me if this action would put the safety of the city at risk, she said, “They’ve been working so hard to help us, the least we can do is pitch in wherever possible to help them.” She asked citizens to sign up to volunteer and mentioned that she would be taking a couple of shifts for the Tampa Police Department.
“I haven’t forgotten how to be a cop,” she added.
So far, the only public criticism of the gesture has come from a certain special interest group.
“Oh sure, that’s great for them but what about us?” asked Ronald Mustered, spokesperson for the local division of Crime Committers LLC. “I guess we’ll be logging some overtime this weekend.”
