Tampa man enjoys “The Final Countdown” unironically
Wilbur Bruceforce of Tampa has discovered a song from the 1980’s that he really likes; “The Final Countdown” by the band Europe from their 1986 album of the same name.
“I found it by accident on Spotify. I don’t know, it’s just a good song,” he said. “It’s upbeat, it’s got that ’80s vibe. It makes me happy. Gets me motivated, you know? ‘The final countdoooown’! Ha ha! Hell yeah!”
Informed that at this point in time, the song written by Europe lead singer Joey Tempest based on a keyboard riff he made in the early 1980s, with lyrics inspired by David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”, is most frequently used to comic effect to illustrate drama in an overly grandiose, over-the-top manner in TV shows, movies and TikTok videos, he said, “What? That’s ridiculous. It’s a perfectly good song. I’m so tired of this. Why does everything have to be a joke? Why can’t we just enjoy something on its own merits?”
Then he started going over the lyrics and music in his mind, mouthing the words silently.
“Okay, yeah. I hear it now,” he said sadly.
To cheer him up, it was recommended that he check out “Only Time Will Tell” by Asia, which in many ways is almost the same song that has thus far been spared being used to mock things on a widespread basis.
