Dunedin theatre company casts summer show

Actors

The Golden Lyric Music Box Dinner Theatre in Dunedin has announced that the leads in this summer’s production of “Death Trap” have been cast.

“We are thrilled to welcome two new, supremely-talented performers to the GLMBDT family, both of whom moved here from out-of-state specifically to star in our big summer show!”, said Glen Hibley, artistic director for the venerable, local performing arts/all-you-can-eat crab legs buffet institution. “Kelvin Spacely who will play the role of successful-but struggling playwright Sidney Bruhl and the part of Sidney’s eager student/rival, Clifford Anderson, will be played by Chris IDunno-SmithIGuess. We’re thrilled to have them! Thrilled, I say!”

Mr. Spacely said, “As a professional actor, you have to go where the work is. Circumstances being what they are, that means going to… what is this? Dunedin? Dunedin, Florida. In the summertime. Oh, well, isn’t that. Just. Great.”

“Yeah, totally”, concurred Mr. IDunno-SmithIGuess.

Deathtrap was written by Ira Levin in 1978 and contains many plot twists which reference itself as a play within a play. It is in two acts with one set and five characters. It holds the record for the longest-running comedy-thriller on Broadway, and was nominated for four Tony Awards.

However in Dunedin in 2021, the show’s run will open with it’s premiere on Friday, June 18th at 7PM and will end after the 1PM matinee performance on Sunday, July 11th. Tickets are $25, which includes the buffet.

“We’ve been here since 1972, offering a full season of shows every year aside from 2020, because…well, you know”, said Hibley. “But we’re back now! And like we always say, ‘Come for the crab legs, stay for the drama!’ Ha ha! Or the comedy, or musical or what have you.”

“Both of these wonderful actors are as gracious as they are talented,” he added. “They’re both committed to youth mentoring and demanded that roles be made available to actors under the age of 18, even though the play as written doesn’t feature any underage characters. But they both insisted that’s who they’re interested in working with. We’re so thrilled to have them!”
